Many people wonder what the difference is between hemp and how Cannabis Sativa differ from Cannabis Indica. While you may think that these are two completely different plants that differ greatly from each other, in reality, there aren't that many differences between these two plants. Hemp is a very interesting plant, and all of them originate from one main species - Cannabis sativa. However, due to very restrictive legal regulations, they had to be divided into two main groups, although this division is very general and actually refers to only one variable, which makes one hemp fully legal and the other not.

How many cannabis varieties do we know?

Currently, there are many hundreds (perhaps even over a thousand) possible cannabis varieties known. Some are characterized by producing a lot of hemp seeds, while others allocate a significant part of their "energy" to produce strong stems. Still, others have a very high resin content (which is rich in cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds). Each variety differs in its content of CBD, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), and other substances. It's worth noting that breeders and farmers are constantly working to ensure that the cultivated cannabis exhibits genetic stability. This means that successive generations of plants should have the same cannabinoid ratio as the plant in the first generation. This is incredibly challenging because cannabis is very sensitive throughout the cultivation process. Even the same variety, when planted at different ends of a field, can exhibit different properties.
It's worth mentioning some varieties such as:
  • Cannatonic – originating from Spain, one of the first varieties to have a CBD to THC ratio of 1:1.
  • AC/DC – an interesting variety from Central Asia. It allows for a CBD to THC ratio as high as 20:1.
  • Charlotte's Web – perhaps the most widely known variety in the media. It was bred in Colorado for Charlotte Figi, a child with treatment-resistant epilepsy (hence its name). This variety had proportions ranging from 15% to 20% CBD levels while maintaining a low THC content not exceeding 0.3%. Thanks to this, the plant was completely legal in the United States.

What does Cannabis Sativa contain?

The undeniable positive impact of cannabis is evident, and the plant contains much more than just CBD and THC (the latter has psychoactive effects). Cannabis contains over 100 different cannabinoids, with the highest concentration found in the unfertilized female flower clusters. Each of these cannabinoids can assist us in different ways. However, it's important to note that some of them are present in very small concentrations. As a result, a significant number of plants are needed to produce an extract from them.

What is Cannabis Sativa?

Now that you know the actual division of cannabis, let's take a look at how it stands legally in Poland. To do this, we need to refer to the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction. In this law, there is a clear distinction between fiber hemp (also known as industrial hemp or hemp seeds) and non-fiber hemp (referred to as Cannabis Indica or colloquially marijuana). Cannabis in Poland cannot contain more than 0.20% THC in dry weight. Anything exceeding this limit is automatically illegal in Poland.

Does Cannabis Sativa produce THC?

It must be said clearly... both Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica produce the same cannabinoids, just in different proportions. Technically, CBD from one or the other plant is no different. However, these will not be products with psychoactive properties, as they contain only trace amounts of THC (up to 0.2%), which will not produce a "high" effect.

What are Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica used for?

Cannabis has a wide range of applications, from the most practical, such as paper and clothing production, to cannabis products such as ointments, CBD flower, or oils, and even medical marijuana. The cannabis product industry is a rapidly growing sector of the economy, discovering new possibilities for cannabis utilization every month. Some people use it as a dietary supplement in their daily lives, while others use it recreationally as a means to relax, especially after a long week of work.

Can cannabis be smoked?

Of course, it can. CBD found in cannabis can be consumed in various ways, and smoking is one of them. Smoking is characterized by the fact that the smoke that enters our lungs can quickly enter the bloodstream. However, it's important to ensure that the cannabis flower comes from a reputable source, as the quality differences between different strains can be significant.
