In recent years, there has been much talk about CBD. The hemp industry has grown significantly during this time, and CBD is now an ingredient in many cosmetics, skincare products, teas, and oils or CBD flowers can be purchased not only online but also in brick-and-mortar stores. Much is said about the beneficial effects of cannabidiol on humans, but when it comes to animals – specifically, dogs – many people begin to have doubts. Are they justified?

A few words about CBD

CBD is one of nearly a hundred active cannabinoids found in industrial hemp – Cannabis Sativa L. It should not be confused with THC, which is also present in the plant. Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it does not cause the so-called "high" effect, does not intoxicate, and is not addictive. It is essential to note that the use of hemp is nothing new. It is not a recent invention, as some may think. Hemp has been used for over six thousand years to produce fibers, and in China, it was even considered one of the most important cultivated plants. Hemp was used to make clothing, oil, paper, and ropes. It was utilized for both industrial and medical purposes. Descriptions of hemp can be found in ancient Egyptian medical papyrus, which contains information about the use of medicinal plants. Hemp also has a long history in Poland. The plant probably reached our country as early as the 15th century BCE. It was used as a medicinal remedy for alleviating pain and in the form of hemp oil, a substance believed to improve sleep quality.
One could say that the current popularity of CBD oils is a return to the roots. Society has rediscovered and fallen in love with the properties of these products. Cannabidiol (CBD) owes its properties to its influence on the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 found in the body. These receptors are located in tissues and organs, with the best-known and researched ones found in the immune and nervous systems. The use of CBD oils in humans can improve sleep quality, increase appetite, improve skin condition, and even reduce pain. Is it the same for dogs?

Effects of CBD on dogs

Similar to humans, CBD oils do not have a psychoactive effect on animals. They will not make your pet drowsy or hyperactive. CBD dosed for dogs may have anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, and analgesic effects. Veterinarians speak of the positive properties of CBD oils when a dog has joint problems, epilepsy, asthma, appetite issues, or weak immunity. It can be a beneficial supplement for dogs dealing with rheumatism and degenerative changes. Other positive effects of administering CBD oils to a pet may include improvement in heart function, reduction of digestive disorders, and alleviation of cancer symptoms. CBD oils are also used to treat anxiety disorders. Therefore, giving CBD oil to your dog before New Year's Eve, when fireworks can be overwhelming even during the midday walk, can be a good solution.
It may also be a good idea to give it before a visit to the veterinarian. The dog will be calmer, and as a result, the visit will cause less stress for both the pet and the owner.
Regular use of CBD oil for dogs may reduce inflammation, increase appetite, and improve skin and coat condition. This is due to the valuable ingredients found in hemp, including essential minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and Omega fatty acids. They enhance the protective barrier, slow down aging processes, improve the appearance of the coat and skin, reduce inflammation, and lower stress levels.
The effectiveness of giving CBD oils to dogs is supported by research, including studies conducted by Joseph Wakshlaga from Cornell University. The study, titled "Pharmacokinetics, Safety, and Clinical Efficacy of Cannabidiol Treatment in Osteoarthritic Dogs," examined the impact of a specific cannabidiol-based product on pain and joint inflammation in a group of dogs. Over 80% of them experienced significant improvement and increased mobility.
In turn, studies by Stephanie McGrath, a neurologist at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of Colorado, focused on treating canine epilepsy with CBD oils. Sixteen household dogs participated in the study, with some receiving a placebo and others CBD. In 89% of those treated with CBD, a reduction in seizure frequency was noted.

How to use?

Similar to dosage for humans, it is advisable to start with lower concentrations when giving CBD to pets and gradually increase them. Initially, a dose of 2-3 drops per 10 kg of the animal's weight three times a day can be administered. If the pet's behavior remains normal, the oil concentration can be increased over time, for example, to 5 drops.
Well-chosen oils without harmful additives should not have any side effects. However, in case of doubts or concerning symptoms, it is essential to consult with a veterinarian. It is also important to note that CBD oils are not a miraculous cure for more advanced diseases. These conditions require specialized diets, products, and constant veterinary supervision.
