The abbreviation CBD can be seen in drugstores on the packaging of care cosmetics, in supermarkets on the packaging of food products, and in social media, in influencers' posts, and special shops selling dried herbs or teas with CBD are located in the centers of larger cities. Recently, information can be found more and more often about CBD for animals. Is this a marketing trick or can CBD really have a positive effect on pets, including cats?

CBD – what is worth knowing

Hemp is an annual plant used, among others, in the textile and pharmacological industries. Their properties have been known for a long time, because from about 6 thousand years BC Therefore, it is not a modern "invention". The fibers of this plant have been used in the clothing industry because clothes made of hemp, they are light, durable and airy. Quite early, in ancient Egypt, the positive effects of hemp on the human body were also noticed. The plant was used as an ingredient of many medicinal substances, with anti-anxiety, analgesic, anti-inflammatory properties, and also as an antibiotic. An interesting fact is that hemp fibers were even tested as an ingredient for the production of car bodies by Henry Ford himself (1941). In addition, the construction industry also benefits from the properties of the plant, using hemp shreds as ecological insulation and sealing of houses.
The mysterious CBD stands for cannabidiol, an organic chemical compound. It is one of over a hundred cannabinoids found in hemp. CBD is often confused with the three-letter name THC, i.e. tetrahydrocannabinol also found in hemp. The main difference is that CBD does not have a psychoactive effect like THC. Any state of intoxication or "high" associated with cannabis so it has nothing to do with CBD. THC-free dried hemp does not affect brain function. So we don't have to be afraid of changes in consciousness or processes cognitive when we use CBD oils.
Now that we know what CBD is and that we are not at risk of "altered" states of consciousness after consuming it, we will analyze the administration of CBD to animals, specifically cats. We can reveal that the effects of taking oils are similar.

For the cat to meow well

The primary similarity between the human body and the feline body when it comes to CBD is that we have endocannabinoid system. It regulates and restores balance to most processes, that take place in the body. Therefore, CBD oil from reliable sources can be - just like in humans - a natural support for the body.
All owners of pets, and more specifically of fluffy balls that go their own way, i.e. cats, know that these animals can be very nervous and skittish. In most cases, cats are not as sociable and open as, for example, dogs. Stressful situations for them may include: changing apartments, going on vacation and being left in the care of friends, a visit to the vet or even more noise, as is the case with fireworks on New Year's Eve or louder road works outside the window. They are helpful here CBD oils, which can have a positive effect on the cat by regulating the nervous system and neuroplasticity of the hippocampus, the area of the brain corresponding to, for example, for emotions. And less stress equals greater immunity and better overall health.
Administering CBD can reduce a cat's nervousness, but not only that. Oils are also a source of many valuable ingredients and vitamins, e.g. A, B vitamins, C, D, E, zinc, iron, magnesium and unsaturated fatty acids Omega 3 and 6. Such a natural mixture may have a positive effect on the treatment of inflammation, appetite problems, muscle and joint pain, and even prevent epileptic seizures. Although there are no detailed studies on this subject yet, there is also talk about the positive effects of CBD on cats epilepsy and cancer patients. The fact is that there is a branch of veterinary medicine based on the treatment of animals with ingredients obtained from hemp, i.e. hemp veterinary medicine.

What is it eaten with?

CBD oils work very well with fats, which is when they have the greatest absorption. And as we know, cats are carnivores and need high-meat meals. The most optimal way is to administer hemp oil directly into the cat's mouth to regulate its amount. Cats are active animals that often... they do not like administering substances into the mouth, associating it with unpalatable medicines, therefore the base in our oil there is salmon oil. The taste of fish makes cats happy they are more willing to accept it.
It will also not be a mistake to add the oil to the daily portion of food. Due to the fact that a few drops are not much, the oil should not be very noticeable, and the cat most likely he won't even pay attention to it.
To start with, use low doses, from 0.4 to 0.7 mg per kilogram of your pet's body weight. However, it should be an oil intended for animals and its concentration should be adapted to the age and weight of the cat. Later, when we do not notice anything disturbing, we can increase the dose.
Although CBD is a natural and safe substance with many positive effects, it should be borne in mind that oils cannot be the only way to fight against cat diseases. The animal's poor health condition or deterioration should be immediately consulted with a veterinarian, and if necessary, treatment should be introduced. pharmacological.
