In sports, the rules are clear. The winner is the one who is faster, stronger and better prepared. Athletes avoid stimulants that have a negative impact on the body and in sports it is forbidden to take doping substances in professional sports. CBD was on the banned list, is it still on it now?

Is CBD a doping substance?

Surely, each of us has heard some myths about CBD. The most popular one is the belief that CBD can intoxicate the body. Of course, there is not a shred of truth in this. CBD is one of over a hundred cannabinoids found in hemp, but it has no psychoactive effects, so it does not directly influence the psyche of the person taking it. Interestingly, at the very beginning, after the discovery of the properties of hemp, which was a very long time ago (over 6,000 years ago), they did not have a bad reputation. They were used in industry and medicine, among other things. Currently, the negative opinions about CBD are most often the result of ignorance and confusion with another substance also present in hemp, namely THC.
The multitude of myths has spread to the world of sports, where, as we know, strict orders and prohibitions prevail. CBD use was prohibited in sports until the beginning of 2018 when the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed the cannabinoid from the list of prohibited substances. A year earlier, in 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) also issued a statement indicating that CBD is safe for health, does not have addictive properties, and its use does not have negative effects. Those who delved into information about CBD are not surprised by the opinions of WHO and WADA. Primarily because the cannabinoid contains many positive properties and components. Therefore, CBD products are increasingly entering the world of sports, both amateur and professional.

CBD properties

Athletes need the right amount of nutrients to maintain physical fitness and endurance. Proper training, diet, and recovery are the keys to success. It is also important to have a holistic view of the body. CBD oils can take care of the body and spirit. They include, among other things:
  • B-group vitamins, such as vitamin B6 and B12, which aid in red blood cell production and maintaining healthy brain functions,
  • Minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, and iron. The latter plays a special role as it transports oxygen to the muscles.
CBD oils may also have antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral properties, positively influencing immunity. They can also calm and relax the body after a workout and contribute to faster muscle recovery.
Oils are just one of the groups of products to which CBD can be added. Athletes should also pay attention to sprays, hemp ointments, gels, or aerosols. Ointments are rich in exogenous fatty acids (A, B1, B2, B6, C, E), phytin, bactericidal cannabidiolic acid, and mineral substances — phosphorus and calcium. They facilitate blood clotting, wound healing, and assist in the treatment of skin inflammations.
Hemp gels have anti-inflammatory effects and positively impact muscle and joint pain, making them suitable for injuries. Sprays also work well in case of injuries, providing immediate relief in cases such as bruising or strain.

CBD in sports

Since the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from the list of prohibited substances in sports, many athletes have openly started talking about using products containing this cannabinoid, such as CBD oils. One of them is the skateboarding legend — Tony Hawk. Although he has already retired from his sports career, he has appreciated the properties and health impact of CBD. His company, in collaboration with the brand 1933 Industries, introduced a CBD-containing ointment to the market. The product reduces inflammation and speeds up recovery. Another athlete who also recognized the benefits of CBD is Nate Diaz, a mixed martial artist. He admitted that CBD oils support the healing process of injuries in the body. Similar to Hawk, Diaz also founded a company selling CBD products — Game Up Nutrition.
As you can see, CBD did not have an easy entry into the world of sports. However, with the development of research on its properties and effectiveness, all the myths that arose around this cannabinoid began to be debunked. Currently, we already know that products containing CBD can be a reliable companion in every workout.
